PM GatiShakti Completes Five Years of Infrastructure Transformation: Over 1,800 Geospatial Data Layers and 400 Projects Worth ₹20.2 Lakh Crore Accelerate Multimodal Logistics

Marking a transformative milestone in India's logistics landscape, the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS NMP) has officially completed five years of revolutionizing multi-modal infrastructure planning and connectivity across the country. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry alongside the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the state-of-the-art GIS-based digital platform—developed indigenously by the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N)—now integrates more than 1,800 individual data layers. Spanning 58 Central Ministries and Departments and all 36 States and Union Territories, the platform has empowered the institutional Network Planning Group (NPG) to evaluate over 400 mega-infrastructure projects valued at an aggregate of ₹20.23 lakh crore ($240+ billion), effectively institutionalizing whole-of-government project design and eliminating inter-ministerial silos.

Geospatial Master Planning, NPG Project Appraisals, and Inter-Ministerial Synergy

By establishing a unified, multi-layered digital spatial twin of India's physical topography and economic arteries, PM GatiShakti has radically accelerated the timeline required to take national infrastructure projects from concept to execution. Key freight corridors—such as the Western and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), coastal port-connectivity railway links under Sagarmala, and Bharatmala economic expressways—are now mapped down to parcel-level precision before breaking ground. Environmental clearances, forest diversions, utility relocations, and railway crossing approvals that previously took years of inter-departmental correspondence are now synchronized in weeks. The platform’s ongoing expansion into district-level planning and social infrastructure ensures that regional agricultural and industrial production nodes are directly linked to high-speed multimodal freight trunk lines.

Convergence with National Logistics Policy (NLP), ULIP 2.0, and 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks

The physical coordination delivered by PM GatiShakti functions in tandem with the digital backbone of the National Logistics Policy (NLP), specifically the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP 2.0). With ULIP surpassing 1.6 billion secure API transactions across 44 disparate logistics data systems, India's multimodal supply chains are achieving unprecedented transparency from port gate to inland consignee. Furthermore, PM GatiShakti serves as the master planning blueprint for developing 35 strategic Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) across the nation via National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML). Landmark MMLPs currently under rapid execution—including hubs in Chennai, Bengaluru, Indore, Jogighopa (Assam), and Wardha (Nagpur)—will consolidate cargo, enable seamless rail-road modal shifts, and provide temperature-controlled bonded warehousing, propelling India closer to its target of reducing logistics costs to single digits of national GDP.
